How can we preserve our cultural heritage and what do we need it for? What is being lost and what will remain for future generations?
In order to preserve cultural heritage, it has to be linked with the present and projected into the future. But how are we going to work with the cultural values of the past in the 21st century? What does “sustainable development” mean for living heritage? What can we pass on to coming generations and how? And will digitalisation be of any use in this?

What has changed in contemporary education? How much impact has a year of pandemic had on these areas of the arts? How does interaction between masters and students play out today? Is it possible to talk about art taking a new path?

What is technology changing in contemporary architecture? What is the architect’s role in the 21st century? Has architecture learned how to interact with nature?
Technological evolution has changed everything: our way of thinking, how we approach any activity, the process of creating new objects. How are architects dealing with all this? How is the demand for environmental friendliness and “sustainable development” related to the challenges facing today’s architects? How is architecture responding to the blurring of the boundaries between the real and the digital worlds?

The conference starts at 11:00 (CET, Paris), 13:00 (MSK, Moscow)
Atrium of the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage museum, St. Petersburg
From February 21st to April 18th, Saint Petersburg’s main museum will host the exhibition “Cartier: Passing on Heritage and Savoir-Faire – Masterpieces from the State Hermitage Museum and the Cartier Collection”.
It represents the crowning achievement of five years of collaboration between Cartier and the State Hermitage Museum, who have worked together to restore five pieces from the State Hermitage Museum’s collection.
From a Persian rock crystal lamp (10th-11th century) to a Renaissance box (16th century), Mughal vase (17th century), German cabinet (1700-1705) and marshal’s baton (1878-1879); these five objects, one of which is more than a thousand years old, required intervention from numerous artistic craft experts: jewellers, gem-setters, marquetry craftsmen, cabinet-makers, watchmakers, goldsmiths and enamellers.
As an echo to each of its objects, Cartier has chosen to present pieces from its Collection Cartier as part of the exhibition with the State Hermitage Museum. Items from the Tutti Frutti collection will form a pair with the Indian vase, while a mystery clock will stand as partner for the rock crystal lamp, and a clock in guilloché enamel for the watch cabinet...
This selection highlights the bonds that unite Cartier with exceptional artistic crafts such as those that connected it to Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, which richly contributed to the creations of that era as well as those to come.
Through a shared love of beautiful objects and the same culture for exceptional craftsmanship, this exhibition perpetuates the fruitful and lasting creative exchanges that have been established with the prestigious State Hermitage Museum since the Collection’s first exhibition in 1992.
